Forgive our sins, as we forgive everyone who has done wrong to us.  And keep us from being tempted.  – Luke 11:4

This past week we had a beautiful opportunity to put this verse into practice.  Last Monday, we were able to visit a local Goodwill and learn about their many community development projects beyond simply their thrift store.  Unfortunately there were some miscommunications about the rules and we did not conduct ourselves in a way that best represents our priorities, Mercy Street, or most importantly, the Lord.  While this was not an experience to celebrate, we can most certainly praise God for teaching us a valuable lesson and growing our character through it all.

Forgive our sins…

It was important that we asked for forgiveness for the areas where we had fallen short.  For several of the interns, this was a new skill to develop.  It takes a bold combination of humility and courage to walk up to someone and admit your faults, but this morning, all of the interns dressed up, headed over to Goodwill, and handed Ms. Georgette Caldwell hand-written letters of apology, as well as their salaries from Monday as a token of their sincerity.

…as we forgive everyone who has done wrong to us.

As we considered how much God loves us and how much He has already forgiven us, we knew it was important to offer forgiveness to Goodwill.  Before heading over, we even got to discuss the idea of forgiving those who aren’t asking for forgiveness or who aren’t repentant.  How often do we ignore our own sin, yet through His work on the cross, Jesus has even forgiven us of the sins we’re unaware we committed.

And keep us from being tempted.

This last part of the verse is often separated from the part about forgiveness, but I think it shows an important piece of the repentance process.  “May I not be drawn back into my sin.”  We praise God for forgiving us of the sins we have yet to commit, but I praise Him even more that He gives us the strength and power to not sin as we used to.  If we ask for forgiveness, but do nothing to change our behavior, it doesn’t appear as though we are truly repentant.  Today when we apologized to Goodwill, we also made a commitment to change our ways and act more respectfully in the future.

Thanks be to God for making a way for us to be reconciled to Him and reconciled to our fellow brothers and sisters.  Praise His Name for healing our relationship with Goodwill and bringing us back together.  We thank Him for teaching us about repentance and forgiveness, lessons that are not easy to learn and therefore often skipped over.  We are also grateful this truth found in Psalm 103:8-12:

The Lord is compassionate and gracious,

     slow to anger, abounding in love.

He will not always accuse,

     nor will he harbor his anger forever;

he does not treat us as our sins deserve

     or repay us according to our iniquities.

For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

     so great is his love for those who fear him;

as far as the east is from the west,

     so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

We have officially reached the halfway point of the summer.  It’s remarkable to consider all that God has done so far and how we still have five more weeks to experience His good pleasure through this Leadership Institute.  We’ve been able to experience 19 different speakers, dinner in the home of three Mercy Street staff members and their families, six field trips, and over 50 different elementary-schoolers coming to Super Thursdays.  We’ve addressed such themes as the Gospel, how to live out our faith, global missions, and Biblical manhood and womanhood.

It’s hard to believe that five weeks have already slipped by, but when I think back on bank trips, church visits, and a day at the waterpark, I wonder how everything fit into such a short amount of time!

At the beginning of the summer, Garrett read to us several passages of Scripture about singing a new song to the Lord and challenged each of us to sing a new song to God this summer.  It’s been encouraging to watch students turn over new leaves as they choose to sing a new song.  They are choosing to spend a summer pursuing Christ instead of pursuing destructive passions.  They are choosing to serve and not to be served.  They are choosing to be lights in dark places.

Praise God for His relentless love and for His transformational grace.  Please pray that the interns will continue to “drop their nets” in the pursuit of Christ and that they will choose to sing a new song this summer.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.  And be thankful.  Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.  And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.  – Colossians 3:15-17

A Trip to the Bank and a Super Thursday

While there are many reasons to smile when reflecting on this week, two experiences stand out as paramount.  The first was our visit to Wells Fargo and the other, our official beginning of Super Thursdays.

On Tuesday we all loaded up in cars and made our way to the bank where several interns were able to open their first ever bank accounts.  Ms. Millicent Lavine was kind enough to explain the differences between a bank and a quick cash store, the importance of budgeting and keeping track of your own finances, and how to save money.  She also shared what it is like to work at a bank and what it would take for a student to become a bank teller.  These were all valuable lessons and it was neat to see their faces as they absorbed all the new information.  It was such an encouragement to hear interns who had been planning to spend all of their money on a new outfit suddenly have a desire to save their hard-earned dollars.

Praise the Lord for a successful Super Thursday kick-off and the 26 elementary students who came to participate.  For those of you scratching your head and wondering, “Didn’t Super Thursday start last week?” the answer is YES!  However, last week was more of a fun day to get the kids excited while the program, complete with Bible studies, dramas, worship, games, crafts, and more, officially began yesterday.  The interns did an incredible job of engaging their young neighbors and teaching them about Jesus.  These future leaders of West Dallas showed their commitment to service as they died to themselves[1] and their own desires in order to make children feel welcome and safe.

Please pray that the Lord would continue to teach the interns about servant-leadership as they grow closer to the One who allowed himself to be the slave to all[2].  Join us in praying that each and every intern would have an encounter with God this summer that creates in them a desire to leave everything behind for the sake of following Jesus[3].  Praise God for all of the amazing opportunities He has brought to the intern program and for the way the Spirit is already transforming lives.  Praise Him for all of the work He is going to do in the hearts of His people this summer!

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.  – Philippians 1:6

Week 2 was another wonderful week as we learned about the Gospel and how to share this Good News with others.  We also finally got to begin working with some of the elementary-schoolers who come to Mercy Street.  This began on Monday with the kids coming for reading camp.  We read stories with the children, played games, and even had the opportunity to go to the pool and teach some kids how to swim!  On Thursday, we kicked off our “Super Thursday!” program.  Every week, 5^th-graders and younger are invited to join us as we dig into the Gospel of Mark through Bible studies, free food, and lots of fun!  The interns did a wonderful job starting these special Thursdays off with a game day.  Check out some pictures of everyone playing dodgeball and enjoying board games under the beautiful shady trees:

What an incredible week we have had kicking off Mercy Street’s new Summer Leadership Institute.  With 12 junior interns, four senior interns, and a handful of dedicated students coming to learn and serve, it’s safe to say I couldn’t be more excited about the summer.

Some highlights from week 1:

-          Mrs. Jackie Pugh from New Life Bible Fellowship coming to talk to us about ministry with excellence

-          A bike tour of West Dallas as we rode around the community promoting our Super Thursdays elementary program and talking with people in the neighborhoods

-          Miss Jill leading a devotional on spiritual disciplines

-          Getting passes to the Y and the boys hoopin’ it up

-          VBS on Tuesday night at Oak Cliff Bible fellowship where we heard a powerful message about waiting on the Lord and surrendering everything to Him.  And the worship music was off the chain!

-          Serving at Edison Middle School as they prepare to install air conditioning in the offices and renovate parts of the building

-          An abundance of food, fellowship and fun!

God has been so good to us as we begin this summer.  I am in awe of His provision in making this program happen and in gathering about 15 students unto Himself who are committed to learning more about Jesus and what it looks like to walk in relationship with Him.  After one of the busiest weeks I’ve had in a while, I am only moved to praise God for His grace, faithfulness, and abundant love.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!  Amen.   - Ephesians 3:20-21

We couldn't be more thrilled about the emerging young leaders the Lord has led us to invest heavily in this summer at Mercy Street! The students will be poured into through daily devotions, classroom time with renown speakers, mentoring relationships with staff members, and meals shared in the homes of believers in West Dallas. The interns will also be investing in the lives of younger kids as they plan and run Super Thursdays for elementary kids from 12-2 each week throughout the summer.
